Letter Mullen Walking Routes

If the word ‘rugged’ features in your vocabulary, Leitir Mealláin (Lettermullen) is the place for you.

An archipelago of connected islands, it is the most westerly part of South Connemara.

The stark, rocky landscape is balanced by the most amazing seascapes, coves inlets and beaches. It is truly the kind of beauty that “arises out of the repetitive interweaving of simple elements” and one that “teems with ungraspable reiterations of details” as described by the author Tim Robinson.

Connemara Trilogy Book Series available at books@kennys.ie

Fascinating to everybody, it is a paradise for ramblers – various trails bringing you to different parts of the island. One brings you to Golam Head where a Martello Tower built in 1804 as protection from a Napoleonic invasion still stands, and another to a heritage centre well worth a visit

Walking by the shore brings you closer still to island life, sights of smaller uninhabited ones such as Daighnis and Inis Oirc, amazing views of An Cheathrú Rua’s Coral Strand to the east, Oileáin Árann to the south and Cill Chiaráin to the west. The film-maker John Huston once had a holiday home on the island and a nearby beach carries his name – Trá Huston.

The stories related and the music you hear at each stopping point will give you a flavour of life here in Letter Mullen over three centuries and introduce you to some of the characters, landmarks and legends that make this area special. There is a special emphasis on the relationship that the people of Connemara have with the ocean, the islands and the shoreline.

The brand new Free Bilingual Audio Trail App has been created to cleverly capture key points in Leitir Mealláin’s colourful history and life up to the current day. The island’s history over the past 3 Centuries includes John Millington Synge’s visit with Jack Yeats on behalf of the Manchester Guardian in 1905.

The images visitors will invisage at points on the trail are story of:

  • Jack B Yeats
  • An Reillig - O Flahertys castle
  • Seipeál Realt na Mara The brig st John
  • Three local islands
  • Túr Cheann Golam signal tower
  • Trá Heuston and the book of O’Laoi
Central to the experience is the awakening for all of Leitir Mealláin’s coastal and shoreline and the health, motivational and educational benefits it has for all.
